M.S. 131 - Dr. Sun Yat Sen Middle School Residency
For over twenty years, Wooster Group artists have worked in residency with students at MS 131/Dr. Sun Yat Sen Middle School. The residency currently supports MS 131‘s Language Arts curriculum by giving students a performative experience with Shakepeare’s language using Wooster Group techniques for combining live performance with video and other media.
Students learn basic elements of performance: using memorized text; learning how to relate to fellow performers; incorporating costumes and props; and ultimately translating the language of Shakespeare into their everyday experience and back again.
The Wooster Group’s in-school residency at MS 131 is supported by: public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the City Council; by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M.
